What is GEO and how is it different from classic SEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your brand content and entity signals readable by AI systems: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. Classic SEO optimizes for ranked link results. GEO optimizes for citation in AI-generated answers. The mechanisms overlap significantly (topical authority, E-E-A-T depth, structured answers) but the surface signals differ. A page can rank well on Google and still never appear in an AI answer if it lacks the citation-ready structure those models look for.

Which AI platforms do you track and optimize for?

Our AI search monitoring runs inside the Effective Marketer dashboard, tracking citations across the best AI search engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. We track which queries in your category are generating AI answers, whether your brand appears, and which competitors are being cited instead. How do you measure whether AI citations are improving?

Longer than classic SEO keyword rankings, and more variable. AI citation depends on topical authority accumulating over time, not a single well-optimized page. Brands with strong existing E-E-A-T signals and clear entity coverage see movement within 60 to 90 days. Brands starting from a lower authority baseline take longer. Do we need new content, or can AI citation work use what we already have?

Both, depending on what the AI surface audit finds. Some brands have content that ranks well on Google but lacks the structured, direct-answer format AI systems prefer for citation. In those cases we reformat and expand existing content before producing new pieces. Most brands need some combination of both. We start with the audit and map out which existing pages are worth improving before commissioning anything new.

Can AI citation strategy work without classic SEO running in parallel?

Technically yes, but practically the two are intertwined. AI systems cite sources that have demonstrated topical authority, and classic SEO is what builds that authority. Running AI citation work in isolation, without the technical hygiene and link profile to support it, is building on a weak foundation. We run AI citation as part of the full engagement because the content pipeline and authority signals serve both surfaces simultaneously.
